I know a college student who is a self-assured, bright, clean living young man. Because he is self-assured, he does not have to spend so much energy overcoming a low opinion of himself. Because he is bright he sails through his homework and still gets high marks for it. Because he is clean living he does not get entangled in the trap of drugs and sex that many of his classmates get stuck with. He has good friends, is good at sports and has many interests.
Because of his personality and life style he can ask new questions: “What do I really believe? What kind of role does the Church play in my life? Does the Eucharist make sense to me?” All these questions were more or less mixed up together, but it was clear that a new area was opening up within him, and asked for his attention. He was looking for the meaning and purpose of his life.
Questions about the meaning of life affect the whole person. They are connected not only with the way you think and act but also, and even more so, with the way you are as a human being. This is a spiritual question. Living spiritually is more than living physically, intellectually or emotionally. It embraces all that, but is larger, deeper and wider. It concerns the core of one’s humanity. For us, the spiritual life is a Christian experience of living Christianity in union with the Catholic tradition. Jesus Christ stands at the center of our seeking. What does it mean to live spiritually—living with Christ at the center? What really matters is to know Jesus and living in solidarity with him.
The gospels read each weekend this Easter season are from the Last Supper discourse of Jesus as recorded by John. The message is about a spiritual life in and through Jesus. This weekend we hear Him say to us: “To you I have revealed my Father’s name and I will continue to reveal it to you so that my Father’s love for me may live in you and I may live in you.” We are listening in on Jesus’ prayer to the Father: “I am not praying just for these followers, I am praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me. I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.”

The Mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church
When the Son (Jesus) completed the work with which the Father had entrusted him on earth, the Holy Spirit was sent on the day of Pentecost (50 days after Easter) to sanctify the Church unceasingly, and thus enable believers to have access to the Father through Christ in the one Spirit. This Spirit is the Spirit of life, the fountain of water welling up to give eternal life. The Spirit dwells in the Church and in the hearts of all the faithful. The Spirit prays in them and bears witness to them through their adoption as children of God. The Spirit leads the Church into all truth and gives unity in communion and in service. The Spirit endows the Church with different gifts: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, wonder and awe (1 Corinthians 12) and directs it by their means, and enriches it with His fruits: love, joy, peace, goodness, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, modesty, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These GIFTS and FRUITS are given to us at Baptism and strengthened at our Confirmation.

Vocations
The Lord said, “I will not leave you orphans.” Pray for an increase of vocations to the ordained and consecrated life. If God is calling you, call the Vocation Office 617-746-5436.
Seminary Collection
The annual Seminary Collection will be held on Sunday, May 30th. The Seminary Collection has always provided a good occasion to encourage vocations for the priesthood and for religious life. More immediately, this collection is essential to help meet the annual operating budget of our seminaries. The seminaries depend upon the continued generosity of all of our parishioners to carry on the important work of priestly formation.
Habitat for Humanity Work Day
We are grateful to the many Sacred Heart parishioners who have supported building the Lexington Houses for Habitat for Humanity in Dorchester. We are now recruiting volunteers age 16 and above to work on a new Habitat home on June 5th from 7AM to 4PM. This work team will use more than $500 in building materials and we ask for donations to support this work. Checks should be made out to Habitat For Humanity Boston, and can be put in the collection basket. God bless you and the more than 150 volunteers from Sacred Heart who have worked to build Homes for Habitat in Boston. Thank You. Call Bob Ludwig 781-861-7231 to reserve a spot. We ask your continued prayers in supporting this effort.
