Sacred Heart Parish Bulletin - Jan 25, 2004

Home

Today, the gospel is from Luke (1:1-4; 4:14-21). Jesus now begins his ministry by reading from Isaiah and the prophesy about the Messiah:

God has anointed me, to

bring good news to the afflicted,

proclaim liberty to captives,

give sight to the blind,

set the oppressed free,

proclaim a year of favor from the Lord.

Once he has finished reading he proclaims that this is fulfilled today in me.

Last week I wrote a letter in the bulletin about parishes closing and added if we wanted our parish to be here ten or twenty years from now we had better be working to make this an even stronger faith community.

One of the ways we could make this a stronger faith community is through small faith communities. There is a car ad “Ask somebody…. Ask somebody who drives one!”  If you want to know about small faith communities you should ask someone who belongs to one.  We have ten in our parish now with another three French groups and there are some fifty families formed into clusters of three or four families each preparing their children for first Communion.

People who belong to a small faith community tell me how important the monthly meetings have become for them and their families.  Some groups are getting to know the Bible while others are discussing a book.  All begin in prayer and all are deepening their faith through their open conversations.  Saint Paul wrote to the Hebrews (10:24-25) and to us: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, but let us encourage one another.”  We cannot reweave the bonds of community, offering every member the gift of knowing and being known, apart from a small group structure.

I would really want a parish of small faith communities rather than a parish with small faith communities.  I know that this seems to be impossible for we do not see the whole faith community gathered about the altar in worship never mind gathering in homes each month.  But we need to begin.

I have told our various commissions that we cannot start a new ministry until we have leaders in place. We can come up with really good ideas but if we do not have the leaders we will fail.  I need you to think about and pray over your gifts to the community.  Perhaps you have the gift of calling up to a dozen people to your home to meet once a month.  I will meet with you and prepare you for this ministry.  You have been blessed for this ministry and with Jesus you are able to say: “God has anointed me to bring good news.”
