Sacred Heart Parish Bulletin - Oct. 26, 2003

Home

The paradox in today’s gospel (Mark 10:46-52) is the fact that the blind see and the sighted are blind.  Bartimaeus, a blind man, “On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, began to cry out and say, ‘Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.”  He utters the prayer most of us pray, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him that his faith has saved him and because of his trust in Jesus he receives his sight.

It is a pastor’s prayer that the people of his parish would have the kind of sight that keeps us in God’s presence.  I want all of them and me to have sight.  I want to see as the child sees with innocent eyes; I want to see as Adam and Eve once did as they were surrounded by ‘every tree that is pleasant to the sight; I want to see into the heart of things, to see beyond, to take time, to gaze not to control but to stand back in wonder and gratitude.

Thomas Merton wrote a poem about seeing:

“Life is this simple

We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent

and God is shining through it all the time.

This is not just a fable or a nice story

it is true.

If we abandon ourselves to God

and forget ourselves,

we see it sometimes

and we see it maybe frequently.

God shows God-self everywhere,

in everything,

in people and in things and in nature and in events.

It becomes very obvious that God is everywhere and

in everything and we cannot be without God

it is impossible.

The only thing is that we don’t see it.”

It is seeing with total attentiveness, with delight, with wonder, with love, and with reverence.  “Master, that I may see.”

Memories

Memories are sacred and precious.  The church makes memory of our beloved dead in a special way during the month of November.  On Saturday, November 1st at the 4:00 PM liturgy we will honor the memory of all those whose funeral liturgies were celebrated here at Sacred Heart Parish.  (November 1, 2002 through October 31, 2003).  Immediately following this liturgy a new Book of Remembrance will be available for all of you to write the names of your beloved dead, so they too will be commemorated and prayed for.

All Saints/All Souls Day

We recognize all the saints in a universal celebration, a festival of the triumphant church of the resurrection in the new and holy city of Jerusalem.  The saints, in a way, are God’s harvest, for it is God who will gather the fruits of the season.  All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation in the United States, but the obligation does not apply this year because it falls on a Saturday/Sunday.

Food Pantry

Next weekend, November 1st & 2nd we will have our monthly food pantry collection.  This month the food collected will be donated to the Lexington Food Pantry.  Susan Ingard's Religious Education class will be distributing supermarket bags this weekend for the Food Pantry collection.

Youth Outreach Weekend

The Office for Youth Ministry has offered the YOW weekend since 1990.  Begun as part of the Youth Evangelization project, the YOW program aims at giving parish Youth Ministers and young people the opportunity of encountering God’s Word in the language, images and music of the young.  YOW will be held December 5,6, & 7th at Lake Ossipee Conference Center in Freedom, NH.  Over the years, the YOW program has become one of OYM’s most popular activities.  For the past few years, the YOW registrations had to be closed due to over subscription three weeks before the event was to take place.  YOW registration forms are AVAILABLE NOW in the Parish Center.  The deadline Friday, November 21st.

SIGN UP NOW…SPACE IS LIMITED.
